Some discovered artifacts from the Middle East are made from bronze and are in the form of beehives. Some are deeply rooted in historic fact, and some have a little bit of both. The Christian Church started casting bells a skill in the 8th or ninth century Anno Domini. If made smaller and cast thicker, it'll produce a higher sound.
